Graphene Week 2018 Will Highlight Graphene Flagship's Mid-Point Progress, Says Alberto Bianco

The Graphene Flagship has reached its mid-point as it begins its fifth year, making Graphene Week 2018 to be held 10-14 September, in San Sebastian, Spain, particularly exciting says Graphene Flagship Health and Environment Work Package Deputy Alberto Bianco from Institut de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire (CNRS).

"I would expect to see how advanced the technology applications are and which have caught the industrial partners' interest and whether the participation of new industrial partners grows," Bianco says.

"At Graphene Week 2018 I will focus my presentation on biomedical applications of graphene and graphene oxide," he adds. "In particular, I will describe the use of graphene oxide for gene silencing. I will present the capacity of this material for complex small interference RNA sequences, to preserve their structural integrity, to carry them into the cells and eventually exert a therapeutic action. I will also try to cover our recent findings following low and high dose systemic (intravenous) administration of exfoliated graphene and its impact on a rodent model."

When asked what makes Graphene Week special among international graphene events, Bianco highlighted its connection with the Graphene Flagship: "Graphene Week is the annual event of the Flagship," Bianco says. "This week is a great opportunity to have an overview of the recent advances of the Flagship towards the highest TRL expectations. This week is an opportunity to bring together the maximum number of Flagship partners, stimulate discussions and open new opportunities between the work packages and with companies interested in graphene and 2D materials."

"Concerning my personal interests on the health and environmental impact and the biomedical applications," he adds, "I am willing to participate in the debate on ethics and the presentations on health, environment and biomedical technologies, particularly from participants that are not Flagship partners."
