Exploring the Future of Graphene-Based Wearables

Join us for the third session of the GRAPHERGIA Hub Webinar Series, co-organised with the POLYGRAPH project. This session will highlight the latest advances in wearable sensor technologies using laser-induced graphene and MXenes, exploring new methods to make these materials biocompatible and suitable for skin-contact applications. Discover how these innovations are shaping the next generation of smart, flexible, and responsive wearables.

Join us for the third session of the GRAPHERGIA Hub Webinar Series, co-organised with our colleagues from the POLYGRAPH project, as we explore cutting-edge developments in wearable sensor technologies powered by laser-induced graphene and MXenes.

Laser-derived graphene and MXenes are rapidly establishing themselves as highly versatile materials for sensing and actuation, with applications spanning physiological monitoring, gas detection, biosensing, and smart electrodes. Laser-assisted graphene deposition on flexible substrates offers an exceptional platform for wearable sensors, combining mechanical flexibility, electrical conductivity, piezoresistive behavior, and design adaptability. To date, graphene-based devices have been successfully employed to monitor limb movement, respiration, heart rate, speech, and sweat composition.

Nevertheless, a major challenge remains: laser-assisted graphene is most often fabricated on rigid or flexible yet non-biocompatible substrates, limiting its integration into direct skin-contact systems. This session will introduce a novel fabrication approach that enables laser-assisted graphene deposition on biocompatible, cross-linked polymer substrates. We will also explore the potential of MXene-based thin film sensors, emphasizing their complementary advantages and real-world applications.
