New possibilities for future energy efficient spintronics

Spin-orbit torque (SOT) phenomenon has attracted lots of attention due to its faster and ultralow power switching for spintronic memories. Usually, an external magnetic field is required to generate a charge current to exert SOT to switch the magnetization of the ferromagnet. However, the external control for deterministic SOT switching is always a big challenge for SOT technology. The recent paper published in ACS Nano, demonstrates an external magnetic field-free and deterministic switching in Fe5GeTe2/Pt heterostructure up to room temperature.

This paper is the results from the collaboration of two partners from Chalmers University of Technology and Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 2DSPIN-TECH. Researchers from MAX IV, Lund University and University of Groningen also contribute to the publication. The findings presented in the article provide new possibilities for future energy efficient spintronics.
