Spin-offs

There is a growing appetite for spin-offs and SMEs that have grown out of research. Here are some Graphene Flagship spin-offs setting the pace in graphene and related materials (GRM) commercialisation.

EU Funded

Black Semiconductor

Black Semiconductor is a growing European semiconductor company, developing photonic systems to increase the performance of existing technologies beyond the current physical barriers. The company aims to leverage the potential of photonics and graphene in semiconductor technologies.

Qurv Technologies

Qurv Technologies is a spin-off company based in Barcelona, Spain. Qurv uses image sensors based on graphene and quantum dots developed by the Photonics and Optoelectronics Work Package. They aim to remove the barriers for advanced computer vision technology to be adopted by industry. They also lead the AUTOVISION Spearhead Project, developing sensors for self-driving cars.

CamGraPhIC

CamGraPhIC Ltd., was founded in 2018 to commercialise its developments with graphene photonics technology. They are building a company of dedicated scientists and engineers to design, develop and manufacture next generation photonic circuits for telecoms and datacoms. CamGraPhIC uses graphene and layered materials to create low power electro-optical interfaces that convert electrical signals to modulated light signals and back at Tb/s speeds.

Bramble Energy

Bramble Energy is an innovator of renewable energy technologies; designing and manufacture high-performance, low-cost, fuel cell stacks using printed circuit board (PCB) materials and processes. Bramble uses cost-effective production methods and materials from the PCB industry to reduce the cost and complexity of manufacturing hydrogen fuel cells, aiming to solve the greatest barriers to the adoption of fuel cells; manufacturing complexity and scale-up.

HQ Graphene

HQ Graphene is a manufacturer of high quality 2D single crystals, selling directly to over 190 universities, research institutes and companies worldwide. Their customers are scientists demanding high purity and high quality crystals for scientific research. HQ Graphene also produces custom made crystals on demand. Examples are semiconductors with p- or n- type doping, 2D alloys with a specific composition (such as MoWS2 and MoWSe2) and other new layered materials.

Cambridge Raman Imaging

Cambridge Raman Imaging Ltd. (CRIL) brings to market high speed, label-free Raman imaging instruments. Our first application is in medical imaging, delivering better patient outcomes through faster and more accurate tumour diagnosis and treatment. Combining ultra-fast fibre based lasers and Coherent Raman spectroscopy to make high-speed truly label free imaging possible, scanning tumours in seconds to differentiate between diseased and healthy tissue. We specialise in creating intrinsically linked pulsed lasers using graphene in the optical cavity to enable imaging at speeds not previously possible. These tunable lasers allow interrogation of the chemical species present to give accurate diagnosis of tumour and its development stage.

BeDimensional

Founded by Vittorio Pellegrini, director at Graphene Flagship partner Graphene Labs - Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), BeDimensional produces and develops graphene and 2D crystals for the manufacturing and energy industries. Its main target applications relate to coatings, paints and material production for energy applications.

Emberion

Emberion was one of the first spinouts of the Graphene Flagship, founded in 2016 to take work done in the Optoelectronics work package to the market. Emberion's ultra-sensitive photodetectors combine graphene transistors with an efficient light absorbing layer, enabling a wide spectral range covered with a single photodetector, from visible (VIS) light to short-wave infrared (SWIR).

nanoEMI

nanoEMI is a technology development company focused on new materials for shielding from electromagnetic radiation. They also manufacture graphene flakes.

BioGraph Solutions

BioGraph Solutions is a spin-off company created at the University of Castilla-La Mancha with the aim of researching the production and characterisation of graphene suitable for use in biological media. The aim is to obtain graphene that is free of any type of contaminant (metals, surfactants, organic compounds, acids etc.) to use into culture media and hydrogels and in toxicological studies.

Sixonia Tech

Sixonia Tech‘s prepares few-layer, large flake graphene materials that are functionalized and formulated to meet your processing requirements and tailored for perfect interaction with the client's desired matrix system. Graphene is a promising material for different applications, particularly as an additive in polymers or ink formulations. Choosing the right type of graphene for each application is crucial to unleash its potential. Sixonia Tech will identify the most suitable E-Graphene for a specific application and also develop the right material form and properties for perfect integration into the synthetic process.

InBrain

Graphene Flagship spin-off INBRAIN Neuroelectronics has just received a €1 million investment from Sabadell Asabys, Alta Life Sciences, ICF and Finaves. This spin-off was born from Graphene Flagship partners the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) and ICREA to speed up the development of novel graphene-based implants.

AstriCarbon Oy

AstriCarbon designs, manufactures and sells nanocarbon-based products. This spin-off also offers training and consulting services.
