Roadmap: Industry needs and perspective towards electronics applications

Focusing on both the electronics and semiconductor industry Dr. Meister aims to give the audience a clear overview of the needs of these industries along with the barriers and challenges to integration.

This session, held on Monday 13 June will feature an introduction by Gonçalo Gonçalves (Aixtron, UK) and presentations by Avik Ghosh (University of Virginia, USA), Daniel Neumaier (AMO GmbH, Germany), Günther Ruhl (Infineon Technologies AG, Germany), Robert Rölver (Bosch, Germany) and Claus Marquordt (RD Support ApS and Ltd, Denmark and UK​) and will be followed by a moderated panel discussion with all of the speakers.

Below the Roadmap session Chair, Dr. Meister, answers some questions about the event:

What is a technology roadmap and why is roadmapping graphene important?

“A technology and innovation roadmap helps to combine views and to get a joint vision of the potentials, the timelines and development paths for a certain technology also taking into account its environment and frame conditions. It provides an orientation and helps to derive strategies for steering research towards market demands. This is done by identifying and taking into account relevant applications, market needs, challenges as well as stakeholders, corresponding value chains and frame conditions. Roadmapping is a continuous process accounting for technology developments and changes in the demand and general frame conditions. As such, not only the roadmap document itself, but also the process of its elaboration, which brings together relevant stakeholders and information sources, is an important part of roadmapping.

From an innovation perspective, graphene and 2D materials are still a juvenile technology, and an exploratory roadmap helps to create a guide and an objective assessment of the technology, addressed market demands and its potentials to meet those demands. Within the flagship, we, Fraunhofer ISI, develop such a roadmap. The roadmap takes into account current developments of graphene towards applications on the one hand, and identifies demands from industry that can be addressed on the other. The final aim of this roadmap is to guide the community towards the development of products based on graphene and other 2d materials meeting those demands and to help industry to better understand the graphene development path.”

What will people learn from attending the Road Mapping session?

“The roadmap session at the Graphene Innovation Forum will focus on the industry needs and perspective of graphene and other 2D materials towards electronics applications and therefore covers one of the aspects of a roadmap: market needs that can potentially be met by graphene and other 2D technologies. We have gathered experts from academia and industry to present their view on graphene and 2D materials in computing, telecommunication and sensors. Eventually, industries will not use graphene because it is graphene, but because it possesses a certain functionality or performance that addresses an important market need. In the session, we want to address these needs in electronics application industries as well as on semiconductor industry level and put them into perspectives with respect to the development of graphene and other 2D materials. Main challenges and barriers towards integration of graphene and other 2D materials will be addressed, so that the audience gets an idea of how a roadmap for graphene integration in electronics could look like. This should help researchers and developers to get a realistic idea of what needs to be addressed in the coming years.”
