SAFARI M18 General Assembly in Athens

On 8-9 May 2025 SAFARI convened its 18-month General Assembly in Athens, Greece, hosted by our partner Creative Nano. The event brought together all partners from across Europe to review the progress and coordinate the next steps in developing Safe and Sustainable by Design Graphene/Mxenes Hybrids.

Workshop: SSbD Approaches in 2D materials production

On 9 May 2025, at the premises of Creative Nano, innovators and experts gathered for a hybrid workshop dedicated to the latest advancements from the Graphene Flagship projects: SAFARI, GRAPHERGIA, and 2D-BioPAD.

The workshop featured:

  • In-depth project overviews from SAFARI, GRAPHERGIA, and 2D-BioPAD
  • Discussions on the challenges and opportunities of Safe-by-Design (SSbD) in the production of 2D materials
  • Strategies for exploiting these advanced materials and insights into future perspectives
  • Exploration of how European industry is positioning itself as a global leader in the 2D materials sector

The event was chaired by Ioanna Deligkiozi from AXIA Innovation GmbH. Special thanks to the project coordinators-Dariusz Garbiec (SAFARI), Spyros Yannopoulos (GRAPHERGIA), and Aristides Bakandritsos (2D-BioPAD)-as well as the more than 40 participants and the Creative Nano team for their valuable insights and contributions.

Workshop: Advancing Sustainability in 2D Materials

Dr. Felix Tiniakos from Creative Nano represented SAFARI at the recent Graphene Flagship online workshop “Advancing Sustainability in 2D Materials.” During this event, Dr. Tiniakos introduced an innovative, fluorine-free process for synthesising Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene, providing a safer and more sustainable alternative for MXene production

The workshop brought together over 80 experts from research and industry to discuss the latest progress in eco-design, green synthesis, and lifecycle assessment for 2D materials and energy storage technologies. Dr. Tiniakos’s presentation highlighted SAFARI’s commitment to advancing sustainable solutions in the field, contributing to the broader discussion on responsible innovation and the future of advanced materials in Europe.

SAFARI at SETC Europe 2025

The SETAC Europe 35th Conference took place from the 11- 15 May 2025 andwas cantered on the theme “Innovation for Tomorrow: Progress in Safe and Sustainable Concepts,” highlighting the integration of innovation through the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) approach.

SAFARI participated through 3 main contributions:

Graphene Flagship

Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and 1 coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship initiative will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The initiative, which builds on the previous 10-years of the Graphene Flagship, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The 2D-Experimental Pilot Line, addressing the challenges of upscaling 2D material production processes for the semiconductor industry, is another key component of the Graphene Flagship eco-system.
