Graphene Flagship spin-off INBRAIN Raises $50 Million for Brain Device

INBRAIN Neuroelectronics SL, has raised $50 million to develop its graphene-based neural technologies.

The Barcelona-based startup is building devices that could one day treat neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. It joins a cadre of brain-computer startups, working on conditions ranging from paralysis to depression to blindness.

By working with graphene, “we can hopefully overcome what current technologies are not overcoming today,” said the company’s chief executive officer and co-founder, Carolina Aguilar.

While its first application will likely be Parkinson’s, Aguilar says the implant could end up treating a broad range of ailments that affect both the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and 1 coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship initiative will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The initiative, which builds on the previous 10-years of the Graphene Flagship, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The 2D-Experimental Pilot Line, addressing the challenges of upscaling 2D material production processes for the semiconductor industry, is another key component of the Graphene Flagship eco-system.
