Graphene Standardisation workshop sparks discussion

The first workshop in the series “Graphene from the buyer’s perspective – the powers of standardisation,” held on 19 February 2021 and organised by the Graphene Flagship Standardisation team from Work Package Industrialisation, focused on one specific material group: powders, dispersions and composites.

On 19 February 2021, the first workshop in the series “Graphene from the buyer’s perspective – the powers of standardisation” was organised by the Graphene Flagship Standardisation team from Work Package Industrialisation. It focused on one specific material group: powders, dispersions and composites.

The workshop had 50 participants including the keynote speakers, comprising 42 selected invitees from 18 countries from Asia, Europe and the Americas. Of those, 20% registered as industrial graphene buyers or users, twice as many as producers, one third from an academic or research background and about 15% ‘others’ mainly with a standardisation or road mapping mission.

The emphasis of this meeting was on initiating and simplifying the dialogue on standardisation. Workshop participants were asked to discuss their experiences with graphene materials and specific challenges that they would like to address through standardisation. The intent was to identify the industry pain points regarding standardisation with an emphasis on gathering input from the participants to shape the future path of standardisation.

The workshop had lively discussions in the breakout rooms and identified that current standardised characterisation methods are perceived as being too time consuming for everyday use on an industrial level. Therefore, there is a need for industry to define more efficient, possibly indirect, methods for characterising graphene bulk material on the factory floor.

If you are interested in joining the next interactive workshop to discuss and brainstorm critical topics in graphene standardisation, please register your interest here. The next workshop will focus on CVD graphene, but other material groups will be discussed down the road.

Participants in these interactive workshops will be asked to contribute to a discussion on the following questions:

  • What are the specific pain points in your field that you would hope to solve by standardisation?
  • What terminology would you like to see included in the coming review of ISO 8004-13?

Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and 1 coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship initiative will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The initiative, which builds on the previous 10-years of the Graphene Flagship, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The 2D-Experimental Pilot Line, addressing the challenges of upscaling 2D material production processes for the semiconductor industry, is another key component of the Graphene Flagship eco-system.
