Industrialisation Work Package helps address needs of today, while planning for tomorrow

The Validation Service provided by the Graphene Flagship is a resource for characterisation techniques.

Work Package Industrialisation contributes directly to the Graphene Flagship's goal of facilitating and accelerating the uptake of graphene and related materials (GRMs) for industrial and commercial applications through its core activities: identifying, exploring and evaluating graphene application opportunities taking into account global competition, improving trust and confidence in GRMs, enabling innovation, developing standards, communicating the outcomes transparently via the samples and materials database (SMDB) and providing information and raising awareness regarding quality control as well as fabrication and characterisation standards. Over the past year, significant progress was made in all these activities:

Global monitoring of scientific, technological and market trends indicates that not only are scientific activities in graphene growing continuously, but also technological applications and markets. The global innovation landscape is increasingly affected by China. Europe takes a good position in science, but its favourable competitive position in technological applications is increasingly challenged by the USA and China. Four promising markets for GRM-based applications were analysed in detail and specific value chain roadmaps were elaborated with stakeholders from industry and research: GRM for perovskite solar cells, graphene-based photonics for data communication, biosensors and water purification.

The in-demand Graphene Flagship Validation service has so far been used by partners from nine Work Packages. To date 19 reports have been delivered with another 16 in various stages of completion. Feedback from users has been rated as either Good or Excellent. As Oihana Txoperena, Research Scientist at Graphenea commented: "The Validation Service provided by the Graphene Flagship is a very useful resource for accessing characterisation techniques which are not available in-house. The service is fast, the people are very professional and always ready to help and the reports are excellent."

Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and 1 coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship initiative will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The initiative, which builds on the previous 10-years of the Graphene Flagship, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The 2D-Experimental Pilot Line, addressing the challenges of upscaling 2D material production processes for the semiconductor industry, is another key component of the Graphene Flagship eco-system.
