Responsible use of GenAI in the Graphene Flagship

The Graphene Flagship has created a set of recommendations on the responsible use of GenAI in its projects.

AI is transforming European research by accelerating data analysis, enhancing predictive modelling and enabling cross-border collaboration. It streamlines repetitive tasks, supports faster discovery and improves decision-making. With growing investment and open-data initiatives, AI helps researchers tackle complex societal challenges, from climate resilience to healthcare innovation across the entire continent today. However, it is critical that research projects approach the use of this technology responsibly.

The Graphene Flagship Project Managers Network met in Vicenza in September – just before the start of Graphene Week – for a workshop on the responsible use of Generative AI in Horizon Europe projects and, as a result, prepared a document with recommendations on the responsible use of GenAI by the Graphene Flagship projects. These recommendations mainly refer to the responsible use of GenAI tools not only in research projects but also on EU project management.

The document provides recommendations for the responsible integration of GenAI in Graphene Flagship activities and is aligned with the European Commission’s own guidelines and Horizon Europe principles.

Bringing together 126 academic and industrial partners in 13 research and innovation projects and 1 coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship initiative will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The initiative, which builds on the previous 10-years of the Graphene Flagship, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.
