The Graphene Flagship publishes its 2019 Annual Report

The Graphene Flagship has released its new Annual Report, a comprehensive document that reviews some of the main advances achieved in 2019. Over 60 pages of European research, innovation and collaboration, the 2019 Annual Report is a collection of success stories across the different Graphene Flagship divisions, covering everything from fundamental studies and electronics to energy and healthcare applications. The release comes as the Graphene Flagship, one of the largest and most ambitious research initiatives ever funded by the European Commission, enters its fourth funding cycle.

Drafted by the Graphene Flagship Dissemination Work Package, the Annual Report highlights the most notable accomplishments of the Graphene Flagship partners, associate members and partnering projects. In addition, each section provides a projection of what the next few years will bring in terms of new directions, added resources and results. Particularly, Graphene Flagship researchers analyse the huge potential for graphene and layered materials to revolutionise the European market across industries, and their key role towards solving the most challenging societal challenges. Graphene and related materials will be central to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals – and our Annual Report clearly reflects our deep commitment to sustainability.

Rebecca Waters, leader of the Graphene Flagship Dissemination Work Package, says: "The 2019 Annual Report has been drastically redesigned to make our content more accessible for the general public. We have selected the most engaging images and created completely new infographics to better illustrate the research and innovation work carried out within the Graphene Flagship. Moreover, we have added four feature articles focused on innovation, sustainability and spin-offs, showcasing how the project is driving graphene-enabled technologies to the market."

Graphene Flagship Director Jari Kinaret adds: "The Graphene Flagship has proven really successful in taking fundamental research into innovative applications. This report highlights several scientific and technological breakthroughs, such as the creation of the first graphene-based retinal implants, new graphene-enabled efficient deionisation techniques, and a novel VGA camera that, thanks to graphene, operates in the infrared spectrum. I am convinced that these advances will continue to bloom in the next phase of the project, and we will continue to deliver on the promises we made. The Graphene Flagship is a major European force propagating a revitalising technology shift in this era of increasing global competition."
