What is Graphene Week?

EU Funded

An opportunity to explore the 2D Materials of tomorrow!

As Europe's leading and longest-running event on 2D Materials, Graphene Week stands at the forefront of cutting-edge research, innovation and technology. Supported by the European Commission, it unites over 500 international experts and students to discuss key topics concerning graphene and related 2DM, and has done so for the past 19 years!

In 2025 the programme will welcome over 200 speakers, including special programming on innovation, diversity, early career development, future EC opportunities, 2DM for the future and much more. This is all in addition to our exhibition area and 2DM pavilion, where attendees will have the opportunity to network and explore current applications and products.

Brief History

Established in 2006, Graphene Week holds the distinction of being the longest-running nonprofit event in the field of graphene and 2D materials. Since its creation, this event has played a central role in shaping the discourse surrounding graphene research and its innovation.

It all began with a gathering of 47 graphene experts in Dresden in 2006, who met to explore the potential of this groundbreaking material, isolated by Nobel laureates Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov just two years prior, in 2004.

Over the years, this event has continuously evolved to embrace new developments and discoveries in the field. In 2013, Graphene Week's path merged with that of the Graphene Flagship, marking a significant turning point. As graphene's landscape expanded, so too did Graphene Week, encompassing diverse fields, from applications to innovations.

Now in its 20th edition, Graphene Week continues to attract interest from various fields such as energy and biomedicine, showcasing graphene and related 2D materials endless possibilities. What sets Graphene Week apart is its nonprofit status, developing an environment of collaboration and innovation, where attendees can engage in discussions, interactive workshops, and poster sessions.

Graphene Week promises a diverse and enriching journey, inviting you to be part of the ongoing advancement in graphene exploration and innovation at this year's event.

Why attend Graphene Week 2025?

All-in-1 event

Graphene Week 2025 brings back breath-taking in-person events – with plenary and parallel sessions, industrial innovation, a dedicated early-career branch and many opportunities for collaboration. On top of regular sessions and lectures, Graphene Flagship events gather unique events to foster innovation and collaboration. The Graphene Innovation Forum is back, in addition to a special session on Diversity in Graphene.

EU-Egypt Workshop on Sustainable Multifunctional Materials and Structures

This collaborative workshop is organised to foster knowledge exchange between EU and Egyptian researchers, industry representatives, and academia, focusing on the dissemination of key research outcomes from three EU-funded projects: SALIENT, GIANCE, and BIOntier. Each project offers innovative advancements across critical sectors such as automotive, aerospace, energy, and water treatment, enhancing sustainability, circularity, and multifunctionality of materials and structures. Participants will engage through structured technical presentations, interactive workshops, hands-on training sessions, and dedicated networking activities. The goal is to leverage EU research excellence, build local capacity, and initiate new collaborative partnerships, ultimately contributing towards sustainable and resilient economic growth in Egypt and the broader MENA region.

2D Pilot line: hands-on design training

This two-day, in-person training is offered by the 2D Pilot Line (2D-PL) project. Expert trainers from project partners will deliver IC design skills to enable access to multi-project wafer runs for all attendees – creating the opportunity to become a 2D-PL customer and “share the mask to share the price”. The event will start with a session of introductory seminars, diving into the framework of the 2D-PL in the EU semiconductor ecosystem and showcasing the technologies offered to potential users. The trainings will involve hands-on practice on Cadence and KLayout with four Project Design Kits (PDKs) for graphene-based devices (Graphene FET – GFET, graphene-based Photonic Integrated Circuits – PICs, graphene-based Biosensors) manufactured by four 2D-PL consortium members – VTT (Finland), IHP (Germany), Graphenea (Spain), AMO (Germany).
