17 Associated Members and 16 Partnering Projects join the Graphene Flagship

Following the decision of the Graphene Flagship Management Panel, 17 new Associated Members and 16 new Partnering Projects have joined the Graphene Flagship.

The new Associated Members are the following:

  • University of Namur (Belgium)
  • The Physics Department of Hamburg University (Germany)
  • The Universita degli Studi di Palermo (Italy)
  • The Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Research and Application Centre of the Sabanci University (Turkey)
  • The Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Patras (Greece)
  • The Karlstad University (Sweden)
  • The Centre for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials of the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain)
  • The Nonlinear Photonics Laboratory of the University Sapienza of Rome (Italy)
  • The University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy)
  • OTENET (Greece)
  • The Aimé Cotton Laboratory of the École Normale de Paris Saclay (France)
  • The Bar Ilan University (Israel)
  • Synchroton Soléil (France)
  • ALBA-CELLS (Spain)
  • Namlab GmbH (Germany)
  • Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH (Germany)
  • University of Latvia (Latvia).  

Each of these new members are part of different Partnering Projects, funded by the FLAG-ERA ERA-NET transnational funding programme for research, which is managed by European Members´ national agencies.

 All of them will benefit from gaining access to the information and networking platforms of the Graphene Flagship and can actively engage in science and technology cooperation with the relevant partners of the Graphene Flagship Core Project consortium. Associated Members are an integral part of the Flagship under Horizon2020 and contribute to its overall scientific and technological agenda.

From nanographene for quantum technologies to graphene composites for advanced drinking water treatment

The 16 new Partnering Projects will explore several areas of basic research and innovation, as for the example, the nanographene application for quantum technologies (OPERA project), or of applied topics as maxillofacial bone regeneration by 3D-printed laser-activated graphene oxide scaffolds (MARGO project), or graphene composites for advanced drinking water treatment (GO-FOR-WATER project).

Associated Members (AMs) and Partnering Projects (PPs) are research and innovation projects funded by regional, national, European and other sources (e.g., private industry). The concept of a PP was introduced by the European Commission to define the principles by which research teams or organisations, which are not part of the Graphene Flagship consortium, can be integrated by providing flexible and efficient mechanisms to perform research and innovation activities, which are in line with the overall Graphene Flagship objectives and be of mutual benefit to all parties.

Being part of the partnering environment bring research collaborations in areas of mutual interest and engagement in roadmapping, among other benefits.

The support to the partnering environment of the SCOPE project

The SCOPE project, funded by the European Commission, has provided support to institutions and researchers involved in Graphene Flagship AMs and PPs by awarding travel grants for Graphene Flagship events and workshops and by communicating their research results to the society and the media. In collaboration with the Graphene Flagship Dissemination Work Package, SCOPE has helped to raise awareness about the accomplishment of the Graphene Flagship goals in terms of scientific leadership, economical and societal benefits. 

Until the end of SCOPE on March 31st 2020, the travel grants and the communication support of research results are available for the PPs and AMs interested.
