2D-Experimental Pilot Line

This new project by the European Commission aims to gather European expertise across the value chain to bring graphene and related materials to market.

The Graphene Flagship marks a major milestone toward its commercialisation goals with the launch of an experimental pilot line to integrate graphene and related layered materials (GRMs) in semiconductor platforms. With the 2D Experimental Pilot Line (2D-EPL) , the European Commission will invest €20 million in the next generation of electronics and semiconductors. Graphene and related layered materials are ready to hit the market, maturing out of the lab for electronics and optoelectronics applications. 


Coming soon: Multi-Project Wafer run 1

In the framework of 2D-EPL project, several multi-project wafer (MPW) runs are provided where universities, research institutes and companies can include their designs as dies on joint wafers. The first run is mainly intended for graphene sensors, and will be offered by AMO GmbH. 

The offered baseline process for the first MPW run is a graphene field effect transistor (GFET) including a top/ bottom contact with an optional local or global back gate, an optional encapsulation and an optional graphene-area opening. The design of the device can be adjusted within the specifications listed below.

The 2D-EPL project aims to establish a European ecosystem for prototype production of graphene and related materials (GRM) based electronics, photonics and sensors.

As large scale GRM integration with semiconductor technology is still at its infancy, the project is built on two pillars: 

  • In Pillar 1, the 2D-EPL will offer prototyping services (in the form of Multi Project Wafer runs as well as tailor designed integrations) for 150- and 200-mm wafers, based on the current state-of-the-art graphene device manufacturing and integration techniques. This will ensure external users and customers are served by the 2D-EPL early in the project and guarantees the inclusion of their input in the development of the final processes by providing the specifications on required device layouts, materials and device performances.
  • In Pillar 2, the consortium will develop a fully automated process flow on 200- and 300-mm wafers, including the growth and transfer of high crystal quality graphene and TMDCs. The knowledge gained in Pillar 2 will be transferred to Pillar 1 to continuously improve the baseline process provided by the 2D-EPL.

The project will cover the whole value chain including tool manufacturers, chemical and material providers and pilot lines, to secure progress in GRM integration and to be able to offer prototyping services to academics, SMEs and companies which can benefit from the progresses of GRM integration with silicon achieved within the 2D-EPL consortium.

Born within the innovative ecosystem pioneered by the Graphene Flagship EU-funded project, the new 2D-EPL will cover the entire value chain, from tool producers and chemical and material providers to manufacturing lines. This collaborative project will integrate several Graphene Flagship members to pioneer the fabrication of new prototype electronics, photonic devices and sensors integrating graphene and layered materials. The 2D-EPL will offer comprehensive prototyping services to companies, research centres and academics, so they can develop and test their innovative technologies based on 2D materials.
