FLAG-ERA Opening its Third Call for Flagship Supporting Projects

FLAG-ERA Opening its Third Call for Flagship Supporting Projects

FLAG-ERA has announced its third Joint Transnational Call (JTC2019) in support of projects in synergy with the Graphene Flagship and the Human Brain Project. The call aims to add a third wave of transnational partnering projects to support and extend these two FET Flagship initiatives. An information webinar about the call will be organized on January 10, 2019. The pre-proposal submission deadline is February 19, 2019.

The FLAG-ERA Joint Transnational Call (JTC) 2019 is designed to expand the current Flagships with new research contributing to the Flagship objectives in selected areas. New researchers and researchers already in the Flagships are equally eligible. Selected projects are expected to be integrated in the Flagships as Partnering Projects.

The FLAG-ERA JTC 2019 comprises two topics, one for each Flagship. For each topic, the call covers a specific list of research areas. The Graphene part of the call is sub-divided into two sub-calls, one for basic research and one for applied research and innovation, which differ in terms of country participation and will be evaluated by different panels using different weights on the ‘excellence’ and ‘impact’ evaluation criteria. It is expected that proposals targeting TRLs up to 4 at project end are submitted under the sub-call on basic research and that proposals targeting TRLs of 5 and above at project end are submitted under the sub-call on applied research and innovation. While some topic areas can be more relevant to one sub-call or the other, for all areas it is up to the applicants to decide under which sub-call they apply depending on the content of their proposal.

Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and 1 coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship initiative will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The initiative, which builds on the previous 10-years of the Graphene Flagship, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The 2D-Experimental Pilot Line, addressing the challenges of upscaling 2D material production processes for the semiconductor industry, is another key component of the Graphene Flagship eco-system.
