On 27 January 2021, the European Commission approved an amendment to extend the Graphene Flagship Core 3 project by six months. This unfunded extension will allow consortium partners time to complete their tasks in light of delays caused by the Covid 19 pandemic which prevented access to labs and offices. The Core 3 project will now end on 30 September 2023.

With a budget of €150M from the European Commission, the Core 3 project is the fourth funding cycle of the €1B Graphene Flagship research and innovation initiative. In this three-year phase of the project, the Graphene Flagship expects to advance much further toward the commercialisation of graphene and layered materials. While keeping an eye on fundamental research, the Graphene Flagship Core 3 will have a special focus on innovative research to boost graphene-enabled technologies to higher technology readiness levels.

In fact, roughly 30% of Core 3 budget will fund eleven industry-led 'Spearhead Projects', each established with clear market-motivated objectives. These Spearheads focus on a wide range of application areas, but all have the common goal of developing new or improved products integrating graphene and layered materials.

Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and 1 coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship initiative will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The initiative, which builds on the previous 10-years of the Graphene Flagship, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The 2D-Experimental Pilot Line, addressing the challenges of upscaling 2D material production processes for the semiconductor industry, is another key component of the Graphene Flagship eco-system.
