Setting the standards for tomorrow
Due to the early days of the material, graphene standards are still a work in progress. At the same time, they are a much-needed prerequisite if graphene is to be used on a larger industrial scale.
Graphene Flagship Associated Member SIO Grafen is a national strategic innovation program with the mission to nourish the Swedish ecosystem for graphene and 2D materials. The majority of their work is carried out in Sweden but occasionally, engaging internationally is motivated.
On 21-25 October graphene expert Johan Ek Weis visited Calgary, Canada, for a five-day ISO meeting on nanotechnology organised by ISO, International Organisation for Standardisation. "We are working on developing new standards, including different types of characterisation of graphene, regarding health aspects of nanomaterials and terminology for advanced materials," Johan Ek Weis explains.
Encourages more to join
Over five days, more than 60 people participated on site and another 130 digitally. Approximately 30 countries were represented. "Many important standards are being developed in graphene, but also standards in other areas that are important to us. By participating in the discussion, we can influence what these standards will look like. I encourage everyone who’s interested to join the committee to ensure that your and your organisation's interests are considered," says Johan Ek Weis.
Next year, the ISO meetings will take place in Sweden during 19-23 May.
