The Graphene Flagship: The Voyage Ahead

Over the past decade, the Graphene Flagship created a unique community in Europe – an ecosystem for innovation in graphene and layered materials. Now - with 13 new projects - it’s time to expand and set sail for new horizons.

Gothenburg, Sweden - Chalmers University, the coordinating support for these new projects, hosted a kick-off meeting 5-6 February, where the project partners gathered to connect and find synergies for future collaboration and innovation.

This fleet of projects from across the EU, work on topics including electronics, photonics, energy, composites, 2D materials, biomedical and safety, and help to ensure that Europe remains in the lead in the field of 2D materials.

Since our inception, the Graphene Flagship has been committed to health and safety, studying the effects of layered materials on humans and the environment, in addition to exploring more efficient energy generation and storage.

Graphene’s thinness, flexibility, conductivity and lightness also open a world of possibilities in the biomedical sector, as well as in composite materials for coatings, foams and membranes. And since you never know what the future may hold, several projects still support the discovery of new layered materials, adding more ingredients to the menu.

These new projects will join our first independent ship in the initiative, the 2D Experimental Pilot Line (2D-EPL), launched in 2020, which works towards the integration of graphene in semiconductor fabrication.

Together, this fleet will continue the collaborations kicked-off over ten years ago, further reinforcing the cooperative community and ecosystem of European experts in graphene and layered materials. The Graphene Flagship keeps sailing ahead. Anchors away, a new journey awaits.

Bringing together 118 academic and industrial partners in 12 research and innovation projects and 1 coordination and support project, the Graphene Flagship initiative will continue to advance Europe’s strategic autonomy in technologies that rely on graphene and other 2D materials. The initiative, which builds on the previous 10-years of the Graphene Flagship, is funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme. The 2D-Experimental Pilot Line, addressing the challenges of upscaling 2D material production processes for the semiconductor industry, is another key component of the Graphene Flagship eco-system.
